Ellen R.Kao

Author Bio

Ellen R. Kao is a contemporary Taiwanese writer of historical and martial arts fiction.

Though crafted in the classical style of traditional martial arts fiction, Kao's works move beyond the genre's conventional focus on revenge and romance. Instead, they engage with modern themes, using the past to reflect on the present, subverting old paradigms, and forging new historical perspectives.

Her writing also subtly weaves in insights into contemporary global affairs, broadening the scope of martial arts fiction. Several scholars have published research papers dedicated to her work, labeling it "era-defining martial arts fiction" and acclaiming her as "a master of contemporary Taiwanese martial arts fiction." Owing to the innovative chronicle-style approach of her Ten Dynasties series, she is also regarded as "a pioneer of martial arts historiography."

Ellen R. Kao graduated from the National Taiwan University of Science and Technology in 1995 and subsequently joined Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC). During her nearly decade-long tenure as a manufacturing and business planning engineer, she was exposed to intricate workplace dynamics, which helped cultivate an international outlook and a sharp eye for diverse personalities—foundations that would later support her literary career.

After leaving TSMC in 2006, she was deeply affected by the 2008 financial crisis and the ensuing global instability. This period of turbulence prompted her to begin writing in early 2009.

Since then, she has devoted herself fully to writing, which she considers her true calling.
